The aircraft, one of only 10 Super Corsairs ever produced, was judged, by both technical merit and popular vote, the most historically accurate and authentically restored of the 15 vintage aircraft that participated in this year's event. Criteria for the judging was established by the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum and included authenticity, quality of workmanship, attention to detail and technical merit. The Super Corsair, produced in the final days of World War II for the United States Navy, was never flown in battle. In 1948 the aircraft were sold in a government surplus auction, when they became popular air racers because of their powerful R4360 engines.
